Montana Felon Sentenced for Killing Eagles and Illegal Firearms Possession

Harvey Hugs, previously convicted for eagle trafficking, receives concurrent prison sentences for gun violations and illegal wildlife trade.

  • Harvey Hugs, a Montana felon, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for being in possession of firearms, which he used to kill eagles and sell their parts for profit.
  • Hugs was previously convicted for killing eagles to sell their parts on the black market.
  • A 2021 search of Hugs' home and vehicles found eagle parts, two rifles and ammunition. Investigators recovered parts of 21 different eagles.
  • Hugs was sentenced last June in South Dakota to three years in federal prison for trafficking golden eagle feathers, wings and tails in violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The two sentences will be served concurrently.
  • Hugs has an extensive criminal record including convictions for involuntary manslaughter, obstruction of police and criminal trespassing.
