Monsoon Withdrawal Advances as Heavy-Rain Warnings Stay Active

The IMD says the retreat will move into more of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh over the next two to three days, raising flood risk for downstream river basins.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department has active heavy-rain warnings for Kerala, Tamil Nadu (including Puducherry and Karaikal), Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Sikkim.
  • The IMD forecasts the southwest monsoon will withdraw further into parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and north interior Karnataka over the next two to three days.
  • Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds driven by a western disturbance, cyclonic circulations and a Gulf of Mannar trough will keep showers scattered across northwest, central, east and southern India.
  • Chhattisgarh could see winds of 40–50 km/h with gusts to 60 km/h, and Kerala is likely to receive continued heavy downpours through October 11.
  • Delhi-NCR is expected to get only isolated showers while its seven-day average air quality index has risen to 171, signalling a near-term worsening of pollution that follows the monsoon's retreat.
