Overview

  • The IMD placed Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad under red alert and upgraded Kozhikode, Malappuram and Idukki to orange as rains are expected to intensify on July 18.
  • Hosdurg recorded 18 cm of rain in 24 hours to July 17 and Kannur stations saw up to 17 cm as persistent showers triggered minor mudslides, widespread waterlogging and rising river levels.
  • A low-pressure area over southwestern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is expected to move northeast, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to Rajasthan’s Kota, Bharatpur, Ajmer, Udaipur and Jaipur divisions from July 17 to 19.
  • Kota’s Ramganjmandi recorded a 186 mm 24-hour downpour, contributing to flooding and waterlogging in Jaipur, Nagaur and Behror.
  • In Behror, knee-deep floodwaters trapped students in a girls’ school and inundated the superintendent of police’s office, while in Jharkhand schools closed and 38 of 40 sluice gates at the Bheem barrage were opened to release nearly two lakh cusecs of water.
