Monsoon Surge Swells Ganga and Yamuna, Submerges Bade Hanuman Temple and Varanasi Ghats

Authorities have activated relief camps, closed boat operations, performed symbolic Ganga Aarti, mobilised rescue teams in response to rivers nearing critical levels.

Overview

  • Bade Hanuman temple in Prayagraj and all major ghats in Varanasi have remained submerged under record-early floodwaters since July 15.
  • Central Water Commission readings report the Ganga at 68.94 metres in Varanasi on July 16, rising about 10 mm per hour due to upstream barrage releases and heavy monsoon rains.
  • Prayagraj district has placed 88 flood outposts on high alert and prepared 87 relief camps, including 26 in urban areas, with 10 camps already operational for displaced residents.
  • Varanasi administration has established 46 relief camps and deployed NDRF, SDRF and PAC teams along inundated ghats, while boat services are suspended and Ganga Aarti is now performed symbolically.
  • In Sambhal district, 36 villages are affected and authorities have set up 16 flood control posts and 13 shelter homes as they monitor rising river levels.
