Monsoon Rains Trigger Nationwide Alerts as Himachal Hit by Deadly Floods

Authorities have issued extensive multi-level alerts ahead of above-normal rainfall expected to trigger widespread flooding, damaging kharif crops.

Overview

  • IMD predicts active monsoon conditions for the next six to seven days with isolated very heavy rainfall in parts of northwest, central and east India.
  • Alerts include red warnings for extremely heavy rainfall in districts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra along with orange and yellow warnings across several other states.
  • At least 10 people have died and 34 remain missing in Mandi district after 16 cloudbursts and flash floods, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre.
  • Delhi-NCR remains alert-free and is expected to receive very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Fishermen are advised to avoid the Arabian Sea until July 7 after forecasts warned of above-normal rainfall threatening localized floods and kharif crops.
