Monsoon Rains Leave 92 Dead and 249 Roads Closed in Himachal Pradesh

Overview

  • Since June 20, rainfall 30% above normal has triggered 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts and 17 landslides across the state.
  • The death toll has risen to 92, including 56 rain-related and 36 road-accident fatalities, with 33 people still unaccounted for.
  • A total of 249 roads remain closed, including key stretches of National Highways 3 and 21, hampering rescue and supply operations.
  • Disruptions to 781 water supply schemes and 463 power transformers have left many communities without essential services.
  • The government has disbursed ₹7 crore for immediate relief, deployed 50 JCB machines and is drafting legislation to ban construction within 10–50 metres of riverbanks in climate-sensitive zones.
