Monsoon Rains Batter South Korea for Fourth Day, Kill Four and Displace Thousands

The Korea Meteorological Administration has forecast up to 250 millimeters of additional rain with flood warnings raised in the most vulnerable regions.

Overview

  • Torrential monsoon downpours have persisted for four days, delivering up to 558.6 millimeters in Seosan and over 220 millimeters in six hours on Jeju Island.
  • At least four people have died and two are missing following flash floods and landslides in Seosan, Gwangju and other regions.
  • Evacuation orders have been issued for more than 7,000 residents, with nearly 2,800 people still unable to return home and about 3,000 displaced nationwide.
  • Flood advisories have been upgraded to warnings along the Taehwa River in Ulsan, prompting village evacuations, and 90 households in landslide-prone areas around Pohang have been ordered to leave.
  • Floodwaters and landslides have damaged more than 1,700 infrastructure sites, including roads, river facilities and farms, as authorities brace for continued heavy rainfall through Monday.
