So far, heavy rainfall activity was concentrated over the Western Himalayas and the foothills, particularly Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Overview

  • A low-pressure area in the west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to deepen into a depression within 24 hours and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast around the forenoon of August 19.
  • The India Meteorological Department has placed Mumbai under an orange alert through August 19 and issued red alerts for districts in Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rain.
  • Mumbai has recorded three consecutive days of downpours with many areas logging over 100 mm in 24 hours, leading to waterlogged streets, severe traffic congestion on key highways and delays on local train services.
  • Civic authorities reported six short circuits, 19 tree or branch falls and two wall collapses on August 17 in Mumbai, and three National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed to assist with relief operations.
  • Seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai have filled to more than 90 percent of capacity, easing immediate water scarcity but raising concerns about dam overflow and controlled releases during upcoming high tides.
