Monsoon Landslides Shut NH10 Stretch Disrupting Sikkim Link

Under heavy rain warnings, debris clearance is underway on the Sevoke–Chitrey corridor via three alternate hill routes pending approval of a greenfield highway.

Overview

  • NH10 between Sevoke and Chitrey was closed from 8 pm on August 3 to 6 pm on August 6 after a landslide at Tarkhola halted traffic for nearly five hours.
  • Light motor vehicles have been diverted along three hill routes while heavy trucks are restricted due to fragile ground conditions.
  • Debris removal operations at Tarkhola and a caved-in section at Swetijhora continue under forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall through August 5.
  • Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba has petitioned Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve a parallel greenfield highway between Sevoke and Melli for flood-resilient connectivity.
  • Totgaon villagers have dismantled 43 homes and relocated as the Teesta River’s altered course since the 2023 floods increases local flood risk.
