Monsoon Intensifies Across Western and Northern India, Red Alerts Persist

Authorities maintain high-level weather warnings; flooding and landslides kill at least 45 people.

In Delhi heavy rains have persisted since early hour of Monday with yellow alert being issued throughout Delhi.

Overview

  • IMD has issued red alerts for extremely heavy rains in the ghat areas of Pune district and in Kangra, Sirmaur and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, with orange warnings in Punjab and coastal Maharashtra and a yellow alert for Delhi.
  • Heavy downpours since July 6 have triggered waterlogging and landslides, blocking roads and prompting rescue operations in Himachal Pradesh hill districts where 31 people remain missing.
  • At least 45 people have died in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh since the monsoon began on June 20, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre.
  • Mumbai and adjoining Palghar face heavy to very heavy rain and gusty winds up to 55 kmph, while Delhi has recorded its tenth consecutive day of satisfactory air quality with an AQI in the high 80s.
  • Authorities have advised against non-essential travel in alert zones and continue to mobilize relief camps and precautionary measures as above-average monsoon rainfall is projected through September.
