Monsoon Floods Sweep Uttar Pradesh, Forcing Large Evacuations and Straining Services

Rising rivers from monsoon rain plus barrage releases have strained bridges, hospitals, village access, raising the risk of further flooding.

Overview

  • State officials said 16,784 people had been evacuated to safety across 23 currently affected districts with 35 districts impacted in all, and rescue teams pulled about 3,042 people to safety on Wednesday.
  • Three people have died in rain-related incidents, including an 18-month-old boy whose home collapsed in Pratapgarh, and dozens of families remain displaced in low-lying villages of Ballia and Pilibhit.
  • The government has mobilised large-scale relief resources, deploying about 1,499 boats and motorboats, 1,067 medical teams and establishing 1,311 flood shelters of which 201 are operational, while distributing tens of thousands of food, chlorine and ORS packets.
  • Localised infrastructure failures have cut services and access: the Khakra bridge in Pilibhit was submerged, road links to roughly 18 villages were snapped, and Pilibhit Medical College ran on generators after an underground cable box flooded and the main supply stayed down for over 34 hours.
  • River releases from Banbasa and Nanak Sagar have driven sharper rises in the Sharda/Deoha basins and the IMD forecasts more heavy rain across parts of Uttar Pradesh over the coming days, heightening the risk that evacuations and relief needs will expand.
