Overview
- South Wales Fire and Rescue declared a major incident early Saturday after severe, town-wide flooding when the River Monnow burst its banks.
- Crews reported roughly 82–85 flood-related callouts with rescues, evacuations and welfare checks carried out alongside police, ambulance, SARA, mountain rescue and coastguard teams.
- Around 685–700 households remained without electricity on Sunday because floodwater and access issues prevented safe reconnection.
- Natural Resources Wales recorded exceptional 12-hour rainfall, including 119.6mm at Tafalog, and issued severe flood warnings as river conditions remained dangerous.
- The Fire Brigades Union said services are under huge strain, citing sustained workloads and a 20% reduction in firefighter numbers since 2010.
