Mongolia Opens Oyu Tolgoi Talks as MPP Installs New House Leader and Health Unions Threaten Strike

The negotiations aim to bring the copper project into line with a 2019 constitutional mandate that strategic mineral wealth deliver a majority of benefits to the public.

Overview

  • The ruling MPP parliamentary group elected J. Batjargal as its leader and agreed to nominate J. Bat-Erdene for deputy speaker after the Constitutional Court decision led to H. Bulgantuya’s removal from that post.
  • Health sector unions said staff across 21 provinces and more than 360 soum hospitals are prepared to strike nationwide unless financing and wages rise, alleging ministry pressure and citing a cut to the insurance budget from a proposed 3 trillion to 2.2 trillion tugriks.
  • Ulaanbaatar officials reported 397 fuel sales points are operating with increased supply, set procedures for temporary residents to activate purchase rights, and expanded allocations for larger homes.
  • Former culture minister Ch. Nomin rejected claims of 16 trillion tugriks in audit irregularities as false and said she will seek a legal review, after Cabinet Secretariat chief S. Byambatsogt clarified his earlier statement.
