Mongolia Gears Up for Storms as PM Faces Dismissal Bid and Ulaanbaatar Targets Tuul River Polluters

Authorities moved to bolster winter readiness after fresh forecasts as lawmakers prepare to resume the stalled dismissal hearing on Monday.

  • The State Structure Standing Committee adjourned its session on the motion to dismiss Prime Minister G. Zandanshatar and scheduled the hearing to continue at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
  • Prime Minister Zandanshatar convened the National Emergency Commission on Sunday to review winter preparations, ordering progress reports and warning penalties for officials or firms that create artificial fuel shortages.
  • Forecasters expect wet snow, blizzards and sharp cooling across much of the country from Oct. 12–18, with Ulaanbaatar near 2–4°C on Monday and hazardous travel conditions in northern and central regions.
  • Ulaanbaatar Mayor H. Nymbaatar said about 80 enterprises identified as major Tuul River polluters must install pre‑treatment systems or, from 2027, face loss of city water supply and sewage services, with pollution fees directed to treatment operations.
  • The capital began selling imported half‑coke briquettes at hundreds of points with reserves in 23 depots, plans to import 306,000 tons for the 2025–26 heating season, and aims to open a domestic plant with Erdenes Mongol next year.
