Mongolia Expands Rail Capacity and Advances Farm Diplomacy

A newly opened 127.1 km bypass is intended to reroute heavy freight away from Ulaanbaatar to cut urban congestion and strengthen export logistics.

Overview

  • The state rail operator reported it has moved 11.7 million tonnes of freight year to date and highlighted a new Bagaхангай–Khoshigii khondii–Emeelt 127.1 km bypass built to boost national freight capacity.
  • Officials project the bypass can carry 20 to 25 million tonnes a year, which would remove roughly 1,800 large trucks a day from city roads and stop 34 types of explosive or hazardous loads from passing through Ulaanbaatar.
  • Töv aimag held a harvest celebration after recording 490,783 tonnes from 140,042 hectares in 2026, a result that the agriculture ministry says makes the province a major supplier of grain, potatoes and fodder for the country.
  • Agriculture Minister Ts. Iderbat traveled to Russia this week to press for eased meat transit, joint foot‑and‑mouth vaccine production with Russia’s VNIIZh, and faster use of the Argus electronic transit system to clear sanitary and transit bottlenecks.
  • Cultural and environmental diplomacy continued with a UNESCO Asia‑Pacific registration for a Mongolian documentary heritage item and a national water science conference in Ulaanbaatar focused on protecting freshwater supplies and climate resilience.
