Overview

  • At approximately 12:30 p.m. on July 26 a power failure at the Moji substation cut electricity to the JR Kagoshima line between Mojiko and Space World and the Nippou line between Kokura and Jono stations.
  • Trains in service executed emergency stops and about 100 passengers on a three-car train near Mojiko station evacuated via a level crossing with no injuries reported.
  • Service on the Kagoshima, Nippou and Sanyo lines was suspended for about three hours before operations resumed at 3:30 p.m., but 10 limited-express and 64 local trains remain canceled.
  • The cancellations and delays affected roughly 20,000 passengers during peak travel hours on a weekday afternoon.
  • JR Kyushu continues a detailed investigation into the substation malfunction, and Shinkansen services on adjacent lines remained unaffected.
