Mojang Raises Minecraft Java Edition Recommended RAM to 16GB

The studio says the change prepares Java Edition for a move from OpenGL to Vulkan to enable higher-end visual upgrades.

Overview

  • Mojang updated Java Edition's system requirements on July 21, 2026, increasing the recommended system memory from 4GB to 16GB and setting minimums of 8GB for PCs with a discrete GPU or 12GB for machines using integrated graphics.
  • The company published clear performance targets that set the Fast preset at 1080p and 30 frames per second as a minimum and the Fancy preset at 1080p and 60 frames per second as the recommended target.
  • An experimental Vulkan renderer is already available in recent Java builds and OpenGL remains supported temporarily while Mojang aims to remove it once Vulkan reaches stable performance.
  • Mojang supplied example modern hardware for the recommended tier, including GPUs like the GeForce RTX 2060 and Radeon RX 5600 XT and CPUs such as the Intel Core i5-12400, and Java now reserves about 4GB of RAM by default so the 16GB refers to total system memory.
  • The change ends a roughly 17-year run with the old baseline, will force some players to upgrade or use Bedrock Edition as a lower‑requirement fallback, and is intended to free developers to add the planned Vibrant Visuals improvements.
