Mohammed Sharwarq Jailed for 16 Weeks Over Assaults at Epping Asylum Hotel

The magistrate heard he has signed papers for voluntary return to Syria following the discontinuance of a separate sexual assault case.

Overview

  • Sharwarq pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and four counts of assault by beating committed at the Bell Hotel in Epping.
  • The offences, carried out between July 25 and August 12, involved four male victims, including two fellow residents and two members of staff.
  • Prosecutors dropped a separate sexual assault allegation that he had denied, which had accused him of kissing a man on the back of the neck.
  • District Judge Lynette Woodrow imposed 16 weeks' imprisonment and ordered £300 compensation to one victim, £200 each to two staff members, £85 costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
  • The court was told he entered the UK by boat after travel via Turkey and Germany, and the judge noted he has signed documentation to facilitate voluntary resettlement to Syria.
