Mohammad Bashir Appears in Court on Terror Charges Tied to Alleged Reconnaissance and Online Extremist Material

The CPS says the case concerns an alleged August reconnaissance trip and online publications, not the October synagogue attack.

Overview

  • Bashir, 31, from Cheetham Hill, is charged with one count of preparation of terrorist acts and three counts of disseminating terrorist publications.
  • Prosecutors allege he drove Jihad Al‑Shamie to the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, on 14 August to conduct hostile reconnaissance.
  • The dissemination charges relate to transmitting 'The Book of Jihad', 'Obstacles in the Path of Jihad' and 'Virtues of Martyrs' into a WhatsApp group in November and December 2024.
  • Arrested at Manchester Airport on 27 November, he was remanded after a Westminster Magistrates' Court hearing and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 12 December.
  • Police say he was released without charge in relation to the 2 October Heaton Park attack, the wider investigation continues, and the CPS has reminded the public of fair‑trial reporting rules.
