MoEF&CC Backs SCCL’s 21-Mtpa Ramagundam Coal Plan With In-Principle Nod

The approval opens the way to merge aging mines into one plan that extends operations in the Ramagundam belt.

Overview

  • SCCL said it received official word that the environment ministry will grant preliminary clearance, with formal papers due within about 10 days.
  • The integrated plan combines two opencast and three underground areas into one project designed for 21 million tonnes of coal a year.
  • The mine targets 314.98 million tonnes of recoverable reserves and converts the closed GDK-10 and soon-to-close Vakilpalli mines into opencast pits.
  • Most output is slated for NTPC Ramagundam and other plants under fuel supply deals, which could steady coal feed for power generation.
  • Company statements say the plan uses existing approvals to limit new spend, extend the region’s life by roughly 25 years, and redeploy about 5,500 workers.
