Modi’s Two-Day Bengal–Assam Tour to Launch Vande Bharat Sleeper and Kaziranga Corridor

The visit is framed as a development push that doubles as outreach before assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam.

Overview

  • On January 17 in Malda, West Bengal, the Prime Minister will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper between Howrah and Guwahati and unveil rail and road works worth over ₹3,250 crore.
  • He will also virtually introduce four Amrit Bharat Express services from north Bengal and two LHB-coach trains connecting the region with Bengaluru to strengthen long-distance links.
  • On the evening of January 17 in Guwahati, he will attend Bagurumba Dwhou 2026, a Bodo cultural event featuring more than 10,000 performers from across Assam.
  • On January 18 at Kaliabor in Nagaon district, he will perform the bhoomi pujan for the ~86 km Kaziranga elevated corridor on NH-715, a ₹6,950–6,957 crore project featuring a 35 km wildlife corridor, bypasses and four-laning to reduce human–wildlife conflict and improve connectivity.
  • During the Assam programme he will virtually flag off two Amrit Bharat Express trains between DibrugarhGomti Nagar and KamakhyaRohtak, then return to West Bengal to launch projects in Singur valued at about ₹830 crore.
