Modi Unveils Rs 34,200-Crore Projects in Bhavnagar to Drive Port-Led Growth

The programme paired major port and energy launches with a call for self-reliance and steps like infrastructure status for large ships.

Overview

  • In the maritime package worth over Rs 7,870 crore, he inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal and laid foundations for container and cargo facilities at Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Paradip and Tuna Tekra, plus upgrades at Kamarajar Port, coastal protection at Chennai and Car Nicobar, a Green bio‑methanol plant at Deendayal Port and ship repair hubs in Patna and Varanasi.
  • He also launched and broke ground for Gujarat projects totaling about Rs 26,354 crore, including the HPLNG regasification terminal at Chhara, Acrylics and Oxo Alcohol at IOCL Gujarat, a 600 MW Green Shoe initiative, PM‑KUSUM solar feeders, the 45 MW Badeli solar project, solarisation of Dhordo, highway four‑laning and hospital expansions in Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.
  • Framing the push as ‘chips to ships’ made in India, Modi said dependence on other countries is India’s biggest adversary and cited claims that India’s trade on India‑made ships has fallen from 40% to 5% and that about Rs 6 lakh crore a year goes to foreign shipping firms.
  • He announced sector reforms including “One Nation, One Document” and a unified port process, said five maritime laws have been overhauled, and highlighted that large ships now have infrastructure status to ease financing and support a shipbuilding revival.
  • He held a roadshow that drew large crowds with Operation Sindoor banners, reviewed the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal and took an aerial survey of Dholera, with some outlets noting minor variance in the day’s total outlay figures reported across releases.
