Modi Unveils Port Reforms and Shipbuilding Push in Bhavnagar, Urges ‘Chips to Ships’ Self-Reliance

Modi used a Bhavnagar showcase to pair new port rules with financing support for shipbuilding.

Overview

  • Modi said he dedicated projects across sectors worth over ₹1 lakh crore, while unveiling maritime works valued at about ₹34,200 crore in multiple states.
  • The government will implement ‘One Nation, One Document’ and ‘One Nation, One Port’ to end multiple paperwork at major ports, with five maritime laws introduced in a new form.
  • Large ships now have infrastructure status to ease access to bank financing and lower borrowing costs, and three schemes are in the works with more than ₹70,000 crore planned for shipbuilding upgrades.
  • Projects inaugurated include the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock, container and cargo facilities at Kolkata, Paradip, Kandla and Ennore, a multi-cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra, coastal protection in Chennai and Car Nicobar, and ship repair centres in Patna and Varanasi.
  • Framing dependence as India’s main enemy, Modi blamed past Congress policies, cited a $75 billion annual outflow to foreign shippers, and spoke as global protectionism and a proposed $100,000 H‑1B fee in the US complicate trade conditions.
