Overview
- India’s foreign ministry confirmed a four-day trip from August 29 to September 1, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Japan on August 29–30 before traveling to Tianjin for the SCO summit on August 31–September 1.
- Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the Japan leg will review the Special Strategic and Global Partnership with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, focusing on defence, trade, technology, space cooperation and the Quad.
- The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi will hold bilateral meetings on the SCO sidelines, including a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his first visit to China in more than seven years.
- Reuters reported that Xi will host more than 20 leaders and is likely to personally welcome Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin; Putin is expected to remain in China for a World War Two parade, while Modi will depart after the summit.
- Analysts expect only incremental India–China confidence-building steps such as limited troop pullbacks and easing of trade and visa curbs, as the SCO’s strength lies more in convening power, with the backdrop of U.S. duties on Indian goods rising to about 50% from August 27.
