Overview
- India’s Foreign Ministry confirmed a two-nation trip, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tokyo for the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit at Shigeru Ishiba’s invitation.
- In Japan, the leaders will review the Special Strategic and Global Partnership spanning defence and security, trade and economy, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.
- Modi will then attend the SCO summit in Tianjin at President Xi Jinping’s invitation, a meeting China has billed as the bloc’s largest with about 20 world leaders expected.
- Bilateral meetings are planned on the summit sidelines, and reports say Modi is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
- This will be Modi’s first China visit since 2018, following an October 21, 2024 understanding to ease the LAC standoff and recent steps such as plans to resume direct flights and border trade after Wang Yi’s visit to New Delhi.
