Modi to Lay Foundation for 2,800-MW Mahi Banswara Nuclear Plant on Sept. 25

The project signals NTPC's reported entry into nuclear power via a joint venture with NPCIL.

Overview

  • The plant is planned near the Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam in Banswara on a site of just over 1,300 acres, using four 700 MWe PHWR units.
  • ThePrint reports an NPCIL–NTPC joint venture structure with NTPC holding a 49% stake and IAEA safeguards on the project.
  • Cost estimates in current reports range from about Rs 42,000 crore to Rs 45,000 crore for the 2,800 MW facility.
  • A senior power ministry official told ThePrint the build is expected to take roughly six and a half years once work begins.
  • Rajasthan officials say the Sept. 25 event will also see launches and dedications of projects exceeding Rs 1.21 lakh crore, including new train services.
