Overview
- The 51.38 km project, built at a reported cost of Rs 8,071 crore, links Mizoram to the national rail network for the first time.
- After trial runs in May and inspections in June, the Commissioner of Railway Safety cleared passenger operations with speeds up to 90 km/h.
- The route serves five stations — Bairabi, Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang — with terminal and coach maintenance facilities at both ends.
- Travel times are expected to fall sharply, with Silchar–Aizawl estimated at roughly 3–4 hours and Aizawl–Guwahati about 12 hours, easing access for residents and businesses.
- Construction tackled 48 tunnels totaling 12.853 km and 142 bridges, including a 104-metre pier, after the project was sanctioned in 2008–09 and the foundation stone was laid in 2014.
