Overview
- The ₹8,000 crore, 52-km project has cleared final safety inspections and awaits formal inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July.
- The route links Bairabi to Sairang near Aizawl, making Mizoram the fourth northeastern state with its capital connected to India’s railway network.
- Engineers built 48 tunnels spanning 12.85 km, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine underbridges, including a 104-metre-tall structure.
- Construction materials were sourced from Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Silchar, Guwahati and Kolkata while skilled and unskilled workers from five states navigated landslide-prone roads using special transport arrangements and dismantled cranes to place girders.
- Train services are set to begin this month, with plans for premier Rajdhani and Vande Bharat trains to operate on the new line.
