Modi to Inaugurate Bairabi–Sairang Line and Flag Off Rajdhani as Aizawl Joins India’s Rail Network

The link brings Aizawl onto India’s rail network for the first time.

Overview

  • On September 13, the Prime Minister is scheduled to open the 51.38 km broad‑gauge line and launch three services: a weekly SairangAnand Vihar Rajdhani, a tri‑weekly SairangKolkata Express and a daily SairangGuwahati Express.
  • The Rajdhani’s regular run begins September 19, covering about 2,510 km in roughly 43 hours with notified halts including Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Patna and Kanpur.
  • Built through rugged, landslide‑prone terrain, the project includes 48 tunnels and over 140 bridges, featuring a 114‑metre pier bridge near Sairang, at an outlay reported around Rs 8,000–8,213 crore.
  • The route is not yet electrified, so trains will use diesel traction between Sairang/Bairabi and Guwahati, with an electric locomotive taking over onward to Delhi.
  • Railway officials say the line will cut AizawlSilchar travel to about three hours by train and trim the AizawlGuwahati journey to roughly 12 hours, supporting faster passenger and freight movement.
