Overview
- On September 13, the Prime Minister is scheduled to open the 51.38 km broad‑gauge line and launch three services: a weekly Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani, a tri‑weekly Sairang–Kolkata Express and a daily Sairang–Guwahati Express.
- The Rajdhani’s regular run begins September 19, covering about 2,510 km in roughly 43 hours with notified halts including Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Patna and Kanpur.
- Built through rugged, landslide‑prone terrain, the project includes 48 tunnels and over 140 bridges, featuring a 114‑metre pier bridge near Sairang, at an outlay reported around Rs 8,000–8,213 crore.
- The route is not yet electrified, so trains will use diesel traction between Sairang/Bairabi and Guwahati, with an electric locomotive taking over onward to Delhi.
- Railway officials say the line will cut Aizawl–Silchar travel to about three hours by train and trim the Aizawl–Guwahati journey to roughly 12 hours, supporting faster passenger and freight movement.
