Overview

  • Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai met Prime Minister Modi in Delhi on June 6 to seek Centre’s nod for the Bodhghat Multipurpose Irrigation Project and the Indravati-Mahanadi interlinking scheme.
  • Modi assured consideration of both proposals, which carry a combined estimated cost of ₹49,000 crore.
  • The Bodhghat project, pending since 1980, would irrigate about 3.78 lakh hectares across Dantewada, Bijapur and Sukma and supply 49 million cubic metres of drinking water.
  • The Indravati-Mahanadi plan envisions transferring roughly 100 TMC of water to irrigate over 3 lakh hectares, including 50,000 hectares in Kanker district.
  • Both schemes have been proposed as national projects and are designed to boost irrigation, hydropower output and economic growth as Naxal activity recedes in Bastar.
