Modi Opens RBI Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar

The new Rs 169 crore facilities are meant to strengthen India’s digital-banking infrastructure and build skills to counter rising cyber threats to the economy.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar on October 25, a project reported at Rs 169 crore.
  • The RBI data centre will host storage and processing for banking systems while the training institute will teach detection, response and defence techniques to staff and analysts.
  • Modi warned that modern attacks can target economies and said India must protect its banking system from “cyber robbers and cyber terrorists” by updating infrastructure and skills.
  • At the launch the prime minister accused past Congress-era practices of favouring the well connected through ‘phone banking’ and claimed loans worth about Rs 1,000 crore were given to billionaires, a charge reported as his allegation.
  • The move follows a decade of rapid digital payment growth that widened financial access and also increased the risk surface, so officials say the facilities aim to harden systems and train personnel while boosting eastern India’s role in national development.
