Overview
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi Pujan at Kaliabor, marking the start of the approved Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project.
- The plan covers the Kaliabor–Numaligarh stretch with a 35 km raised section over nine animal corridors, 21 km of bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat, and roughly 30 km of widening.
- NHIDCL under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will execute the project with an official construction target of 36 months.
- Officials say the design follows Supreme Court directions and recommendations from the Wildlife Institute of India, with environmental safeguards and monitoring requirements.
- The corridor aims to reduce vehicle–wildlife collisions documented near the park, including a Gauhati University finding of 6,036 roadkills in 2016–17, while promising shorter travel times, stronger connectivity, tourism gains and about 35 lakh person-days of employment.
