Modi Lays Foundation for IIT Jammu Phase-B Expansion

The Rs 1,398 crore upgrade introduces a research park modeled on IIT Madras to strengthen industry–academia ties in North India.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the project via video link while Union Minister Jitendra Singh attended the ceremony on campus in Jammu.
  • Phase-B will add academic and residential buildings, laboratories and a dedicated research park described by officials as the first of its kind in North India.
  • Officials highlighted that Phase-A facilities are complete and noted IIT Jammu’s rise to 56th in the 2025 NIRF Engineering rankings since its 2016 establishment.
  • Agency reports state the Prime Minister also laid foundations for expansions at eight IITs worth about Rs 11,000 crore, aiming to create capacity for roughly 10,000 additional students over four years.
  • Separately, officials said the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 11,828 crore plan to expand five new IITs, targeting a combined student strength of nearly 12,000.
