Modi Launches Rs 11,000-Crore Expansion Across 8 IITs to Add Seats, Build Research Parks

The research-park push ties the campus build-out to industry collaboration.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid foundation stones for projects at IITs Tirupati, Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Jodhpur, Patna and Indore.
  • The government says the programme will create capacity for about 10,000 additional students within four years alongside eight new research parks.
  • At IIT Jammu, Phase-B works are budgeted at Rs 1,398 crore and include a dedicated research park modeled on IIT Madras, described as a first for North India.
  • Union MoS Jitendra Singh said IIT Jammu has progressed fastest among newer IITs and placed 56th in the 2025 NIRF engineering rankings.
  • In the same events, Modi announced over Rs 50,000 crore of projects in Jharsuguda, Odisha, and the commissioning of more than 97,500 4G towers costing about Rs 37,000 crore, including over 92,600 BSNL sites.
