Modi Launches Bihar Women’s Cash Scheme With Rs 10,000 to 75 Lakh

Opposition parties label the payout a pre-poll tactic, pitching larger monthly support.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually rolled out the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, crediting Rs 7,500 crore via direct transfers to 7.5 million women in Bihar in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
  • Under the plan, each beneficiary gets a Rs 10,000 seed grant with assessments for up to Rs 2 lakh in further assistance, plus training and subsidised loans delivered through Jeevika self-help group networks.
  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged women to accept the money but vote against the NDA, while promising Rs 2,500 per month for women and health coverage up to Rs 25 lakh if the INDIA bloc forms the government.
  • RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned the scheme’s longevity and alleged it could be recovered as a loan, a claim Union minister Nityanand Rai dismissed while defending the initiative as women-focused empowerment.
  • Beneficiaries quoted in Patna welcomed the transfer as relief for livelihoods, as coverage placed the rollout within a broader NDA welfare push ahead of elections likely to be announced soon.
