Modi Inaugurates Rs 3,350 Crore Development Package for Ladakh

The projects are designed to widen civilian access, strengthen military logistics, improve local power and water systems, and prompt fresh talks between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ladakh leaders

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated five linked projects on Thursday, Oct 15, 2026, committing about Rs 3,350 crore to new air, road, power, heritage and water works in Ladakh.
  • The new Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport terminal cost roughly Rs 640 crore, covers about 23,800 sq m, and is built to handle about 3.5 million passengers a year while using geothermal and solar systems to cut the terminal’s energy load.
  • The Border Roads Organisation’s 298-km Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road provides an alternative land corridor to Ladakh through Zanskar, shortening travel times and improving supply and troop movement to high-altitude passes such as Shinkun La.
  • A 9 MW Hanu small hydro project and a 66 kV double-circuit Dah‑Hanu‑Khaltsi transmission line were opened to strengthen local power generation and evacuation and to improve the reliability of Ladakh’s electricity network.
  • India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat and 40 village water bodies under Project Him Sarovar were dedicated to protect prehistoric rock art and to store seasonal runoff for irrigation, and officials say the package will be followed by MHA‑LAB/KDA talks on governance and local development commitments.
