Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport’s First Phase

Domestic flights are due to start within weeks and international services are targeted for December under a DGCA aerodrome licence granted on September 30.

Overview

  • Built by the Adani Group for about Rs 19,650 crore (~$2.2 billion), Phase 1 opens with capacity for 20 million passengers per year.
  • The full project is planned to scale to four terminals and two runways handling up to 90 million passengers and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.
  • Ownership rests with Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, comprising MIAL at 74% and CIDCO at 26%.
  • Project features include a lotus-inspired design, an Automated People Mover, DigiYatra-enabled processing, SAF storage, solar power generation and planned water-taxi connectivity.
  • Modi framed the launch as expanding access to air travel and trade, saying the hub will ease pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport and connect Maharashtra’s farmers to markets in the Middle East and Europe.
