Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport, Marking Phase 1 Launch of India’s New Aviation Hub

Built by Adani for about Rs 19,650 crore, the greenfield facility plans to begin domestic flights within weeks with international services targeted for December.

Overview

  • India’s aviation regulator granted NMIA an Aerodrome Licence on September 30, clearing the way for operational rollout.
  • Phase 1 spans about 1,160 hectares with capacity for 20 million passengers a year and 0.5 million tonnes of cargo, with a planned full build-out to roughly 90 million passengers and 3.25 million tonnes.
  • Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the airport incorporates an Automated People Mover, DigiYatra-based processing, Sustainable Aviation Fuel storage, 47 MW of solar capacity, electric buses and a planned water taxi link.
  • Mumbai becomes the only Indian metro with a second international airport, a move intended to ease congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and expand regional connectivity.
  • Ownership rests with Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, comprising MIAL at 74% and CIDCO at 26%, and airlines including IndiGo, Air India and Akasa have indicated plans to operate from the new hub.
