Modi Inaugurates Bairabi–Sairang Rail Link, Putting Aizawl on India’s Railway Map

The 51.38‑km, tunnel‑heavy line through steep terrain advances the Act East agenda, promising shorter trips and lower‑cost freight for Mizoram.

Overview

  • Indian Railways flagged off three new long‑distance services from Sairang: a weekly Rajdhani to Delhi’s Anand Vihar, a tri‑weekly express to Kolkata, and a daily express to Guwahati.
  • Built at about Rs 8,070 crore, the project features 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges, including a 114‑metre pier bridge taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.
  • The inauguration was conducted virtually from Lengpui Airport after bad weather prevented the Prime Minister from reaching the main venue in Aizawl.
  • With this link, Aizawl becomes the fourth northeastern state capital connected by rail, and officials project sharp travel time cuts, including AizawlGuwahati to roughly 12 hours by train.
  • Modi also dedicated and laid foundations for development works worth over Rs 9,000 crore, including the Aizawl Bypass, key road corridors, an LPG bottling plant, sports facilities and new schools.
