Modi Inaugurates Bairabi–Sairang Line, Flags Off Mizoram’s First Rajdhani

The 51.38 km link brings Aizawl onto the national rail map, promising quicker journeys with lower costs.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the new Bairabi–Sairang railway line to the nation and launched the service virtually from Lengpui airport due to bad weather.
  • Indian Railways introduced three services from Sairang: a weekly Rajdhani to Delhi starting September 19, a tri‑weekly Kolkata service beginning September 18, and a daily Guwahati service with timings published by NFR and IRCTC.
  • The project spans 51.38 km and cost about Rs 8,070 crore, featuring extensive tunnelling and 55 major bridges, including a 114‑metre pier bridge taller than the Qutub Minar.
  • Aizawl now becomes the fourth Northeastern capital directly connected by rail, following Guwahati, Agartala and Itanagar.
  • Railway officials say the new link will cut travel times such as AizawlGuwahati to roughly 12 hours by train and AizawlSilchar to about 3 hours, while improving freight movement and market access.
