Overview

  • The MEA confirmed Modi’s travel to Japan on August 29–30 and to Tianjin for the SCO summit on August 31–September 1.
  • India said the summit declaration text is still being finalised and it is working to secure a strong condemnation of terrorism, including cross-border terrorism.
  • Bilateral meetings are expected on the sidelines, with an expected meeting with Xi Jinping and a possible meeting with Vladimir Putin still unconfirmed.
  • This will be Modi’s first visit to China in more than seven years as the two sides pursue incremental confidence-building after the 2020 Galwan clashes.
  • The trip follows a U.S. tariff hike lifting duties on Indian goods to 50% from August 27, as Tokyo talks focus on cooperation in critical minerals, defence, ship maintenance and space.
