Modi Confirms Japan Trip and China SCO Visit as U.S. Tariffs Take Effect

Overview

  • India’s foreign ministry confirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan on Aug. 29–30 and then Tianjin, China, for the SCO leaders’ summit on Aug. 31–Sept. 1.
  • Modi is set to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the SCO sidelines, his first China visit in more than seven years.
  • An additional 25% U.S. tariff on Indian goods takes effect Aug. 27, lifting total duties to about 50% in response to India’s purchases of discounted Russian crude.
  • India is working with SCO members to secure a strong leaders’ declaration condemning terrorism, including cross‑border attacks, with the text still under negotiation.
  • In Tokyo, Modi and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will review the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with discussions expected on Quad cooperation, critical minerals, defence collaboration, ship maintenance and ISROJAXA space projects.
