Overview
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally commissioned INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray at Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port on Sunday, June 21, inducting the vessels into the Indian Navy.
- The ships were designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), which was recently granted Navratna status to expand its financial and operational autonomy.
- INS Dunagiri is the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate fitted with BrahMos surface‑to‑surface missiles and the Medium Range Surface‑to‑Air Missile system to strengthen blue‑water combat capability.
- INS Sanshodhak is a large survey vessel equipped with autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles for coastal and deep‑water hydrographic and oceanographic mapping, while INS Agray is an Arnala‑class shallow‑water ASW craft carrying lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and shallow‑water sonar.
- All three platforms exceed 75% indigenous content, involved more than 200 MSMEs in construction, and form part of a wider naval build‑up that has added over 40 Made‑in‑India vessels recently with about 45 large platforms under construction, a development that is expected to create jobs and deepen domestic shipbuilding and MRO capacity.
