Modi Approves Delhi–Guwahati Bullet Train Corridor

Railway minister says the project is entering design under a 'Make in India' model with no firm cost or completion dates disclosed.

Overview

  • The northern high‑speed corridor linking Delhi to Guwahati via Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Siliguri was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday.
  • Vaishnaw published projected travel times that include Delhi–Agra in 59 minutes, Delhi–Kanpur in 1 hour 45 minutes, Delhi–Lucknow in 2 hours 12 minutes and Delhi–Varanasi in about 3 hours 33–35 minutes.
  • On the same weekend the ministry launched new Vande Bharat sleeper services, flagging off Varanasi–New Delhi and Bengaluru–Mumbai overnight trains that will run on regular schedules and add modern overnight options for passengers.
  • Officials framed the corridor as a 'Make in India' programme that will standardise factory‑made pillars and girders, use domestically built components and create jobs for engineers, welders and small manufacturers.
  • The approval is a planning milestone not a delivery date: the corridor is in the design phase, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high‑speed project remains the only high‑speed line under active construction, and detailed costs, land, clearances and timelines have not been disclosed.
