Modi and Yunus Exchange Eid Greetings as India-Bangladesh Tensions Persist

The gesture highlights efforts to mend ties after New Delhi imposed northeastern land port trade restrictions following the August ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a June 4 letter extending Eid al-Adha greetings to Bangladesh and invoked shared values of sacrifice, compassion and brotherhood.
  • Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus replied on June 6 with gratitude for Modi’s message and affirmed that mutual respect will guide cooperation between the two nations.
  • Relations have remained strained since the August 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina, particularly after Yunus described India’s northeastern states as landlocked during a March visit to China.
  • India has imposed restrictions on Bangladeshi ready-made garments and other goods at northeastern land ports against a backdrop of a roughly $10 billion trade deficit.
  • Bangladesh’s interim government has set national elections for April 2026 despite calls from major political factions and army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman for polls by December 2025.
