Modesto Man Arrested in Murrieta Home Invasion That Killed 70-Year-Old, Injured Wife

Police say officers found the suspect hiding in a ravine minutes later after a K-9-assisted search.

Overview

  • The attack was reported around 8:18 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Old Spring Road in Murrieta.
  • The wife told 911 she was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver and her husband was stabbed with a knife.
  • Officers identified the suspect as 36-year-old Manuel Arturo Alvarez of Modesto and booked him into the Cois Byrd Detention Center, where reports say he is being held without bail.
  • The woman remains hospitalized in stable condition as detectives withhold a motive and full victim identities and ask witnesses to contact Detective Munyer.
  • Investigators said the assault appears random, that Alvarez may have entered through an unlocked door and been under the influence, and that he was treated for K-9 bite injuries and has not yet been medically cleared for court.
