Penk Chen has created the Rasti Computer, a modern tribute to the iconic GRiD Compass, featuring Framework laptop parts and a 3D-printed chassis.
The Rasti Computer combines a Framework 13 mainboard, battery, wireless antenna module, and a 10.4-inch QLED touch display, housed in a design reminiscent of 1980s laptops.
A custom mechanical keyboard, designed specifically for the Rasti, uses Choc Low Profile switches and a Pi Pico controller, with plans to make it available as a standalone product.
The project pays homage to the GRiD Compass, the first clamshell-style laptop used by NASA and the military, known for its durability and compact design.
Build instructions for the Rasti Computer are still in progress, with editable 3D printer files available for enthusiasts interested in replicating the project.
