Overview

  • Preliminary SCDF findings suggest a personal mobility device battery pack in the living room may have ignited the fire in the fourth-floor HDB flat on Aug 13.
  • Firefighters who arrived at about 4 pm found the living room and bedroom ablaze and discovered a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman unconscious in the kitchen; both died at Singapore General Hospital, two neighbours were hospitalised and about 60 residents were evacuated.
  • Radin Mas Town Council and grassroots volunteers restored power to Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah and provided temporary housing, food, water and bedding for displaced residents.
  • SCDF has urged residents to avoid charging batteries unattended overnight and to use only original equipment as investigations into the blaze continue.
  • The incident comes amid a sharp rise in active mobility-device fires, with SCDF data showing a 38.9% increase in PMD-related blazes in 2024 and a higher tally of fire-related deaths so far in 2025 compared with last year.
