Mobile Mayoral Runoff Today as Drummond and Cheriogotis Press Turnout

Turnout is expected to decide the open-seat race with both campaigns mobilizing rides, calls and volunteers.

Overview

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the winner will be sworn in for a four-year term on Nov. 3.
  • In the Aug. 26 vote, Barbara Drummond led with roughly 33.7–34% to Spiro Cheriogotis’ 27.6–28%, forcing today’s runoff.
  • Drummond’s backing includes a late endorsement from U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr. and support from Cory Booker, Doug Jones, Pete Buttigieg and Randall Woodfin, while Cheriogotis is endorsed by Mayor Sandy Stimpson, former Mayor Mike Dow, local law enforcement unions and Realtors.
  • Cheriogotis has dominated fundraising with more than $1.7 million raised compared with over $580,000 for Drummond.
  • Analysts point to West Mobile as a key battleground, with roughly 16,000 votes from eliminated candidates Paul Prine and Connie Hudson in play and neither issuing an endorsement.
