Overview
- Around 8 a.m. on Aug. 28, white smoke rose from a passenger’s carry case aboard the Niigata–Tokyo Toki 300 between Omiya and Ueno.
- Police said a man in his 50s found a mobile battery inside the case smoking and smothered it with clothing, causing a minor burn to his hand.
- Ueno Station staff alerted emergency services with a 119 call, and the fire was quickly extinguished.
- JR East said the train arrived at Tokyo Station nine minutes late, and the return Toki 307 departed about 15 minutes late using a different car.
- No other injuries or carriage damage were confirmed, and the battery was removed from the train at Ueno according to reports.
